How to Do a Subscription Audit (and Cancel What You Don't Use)
Published on October 6, 2026
Subscriptions are easy to start and easy to forget. A free trial turns into a monthly charge, an annual plan renews while you're on holiday, and a service you used once a year ago is still quietly billing you.
A subscription audit takes about an hour and often pays for itself immediately. Here's how to do one.
Find every subscription
Go through your last three months of bank and card statements and list every recurring charge. Then check the last twelve months for annual renewals — those are the ones most likely to surprise you.
Also check app store subscriptions on your phone, and search your email for words like "receipt", "renewal", and "subscription". It's common to find something you'd completely forgotten about.
Calculate the yearly cost
For each subscription, work out what it costs per year. A small monthly fee looks harmless; multiplied by twelve, it often doesn't.
Adding them all up gives you a single yearly number for subscriptions. For many people, that number is the most persuasive part of the whole audit.
Sort into keep, downgrade, and cancel
Go through the list and ask one question for each: did I use this in the last month, and would I sign up for it again today at this price?
Keep what you use and value. Downgrade where a cheaper plan would do — fewer screens, less storage, an ad-supported tier. Cancel the rest. For services you use occasionally, consider cancelling and re-subscribing only for the months you need them.
Watch for duplicates and family overlaps
Households often pay for the same thing twice: two music subscriptions, two cloud storage plans, or individual plans where a shared family plan would be cheaper.
Compare notes with whoever you live with. Consolidating overlapping services is often the easiest saving of all.
Stay on top of renewals
An audit is a great reset, but subscriptions creep back. The way to keep them under control is to know about each renewal before it happens, so you can decide to keep or cancel while there's still time.
BillZen tracks your subscriptions alongside your other bills and reminds you before each renewal date. With every subscription in one timeline, the next audit takes minutes instead of an hour.
